Festival of the Seven
2015

The Art Gallery of Sudbury/Galerie d'art de Sudbury (AGS) presents the summer long ‘Festival of the Seven’ to celebrate local and Canadian contemporary art, music and film inspired by Franklin Carmichael and the Group of Seven. The festival features special exhibitions, interactive excursions, musical performances, art, film, education workshops and the launch of Ian Tamblyn's CD 'Walking in the Footsteps'.The Festival of the Seven highlights the significant impact the Sudbury, Killarney and La Cloche areas had on Franklin Carmichael , A.Y. Jackson, The Group of Seven and their contemporaries.

The Art Gallery of Sudbury in partnership with Canadian singer songwriter and Juno award winner Ian Tamblyn has released a CD celebrating the Group of Seven as part of their ongoing ‘Festival of the Seven’. “When creating this album, I wanted to bring forth the different facets of the Group of Seven, beyond their painting. I found it interesting that most of them incorporated a strong spiritual search into their work. Harris, MacDonald, Varley and Carmichael all were seeking something deeply spiritual.” – Ian Tamblyn

The ‘Walking in the Footsteps’ CD cover was designed by the celebrated artist George Walker and it includes two Franklin Carmichael watercolours that have never been exhibited and an A.J. Casson oil from a private collection. The 16-page booklet includes Joachim Gauthier’s famous photo of Carmichael at Grace Lake along with lyrics and liner notes by Ian Tamblyn for all 15 tracks.

We are now planning for 2015 and activities will be added so stay tuned online, on our Facebook page, or by calling the Gallery 705.675.4871. 'Festival of the Seven' is celebrated with Northeastern Ontario's 'Awakenings Of' events. If you are in the Sudbury, La Cloche, Manitoulin or Killarney area and have a Group of 7 inspired event give us a call at 705.675.4871.

In July of 1977, Jim and Sue Waddington began a thirty-six year journey of discovery that has culminated in this remarkable achievement, In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven. Determined to locate, document, and photograph the actual landscapes that inspired and influenced the brushes of A.Y. Jackson, Franklin Carmichael, Arthur Lismer, Lawren Harris, A.J. Casson, J.E.H. MacDonald, Tom Thomson, and Frederick Varley, the Waddingtons embarked on an artistic expedition that carried them across Canada from sea to sea to sea.
